FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – An Air Quality Alert is in place for northeast Indiana again today (Friday, July 16, 2026).
The National Weather Service says that the alert will run until midnight, as ozone levels are expected to be unhealthy due to hot temperatures and smoke from wildfires drifting into the region. Children, the elderly, and people with heart or breathing problems are more likely to be impacted by the lower air quality.
The NWS put out the following:
…AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT EDT FRIDAY NIGHT…
The officials at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management
have declared an Air Quality Action Day, in effect for Thursday and
Friday, July 16 and 17.
An Air Quality Action Day for PM 2.5 has been issued. Fine
particulate levels are expected to be in the very unhealthy,
unhealthy, and unhealthy for Sensitive Groups range.
Here are some recommended actions that the public can take:
* Walk, bike, carpool or use public transportation.
* Avoid using the drive-through and combine errands into one trip.
* Avoid refueling your vehicle or using gasoline-powered lawn
equipment until after 7pm.
* Turn off your engine when idling for more than 30 seconds.
* Conserve energy by turning off lights or setting the air
conditioner to 75 degrees or above.
