Study: Sexting Is Not Just About Sex

Have you ever sent a sext before? In case you don’t know, a sext is a text message full of sexual content. But it turns out the reasons people have for sending them are not what you’d expect.

Texas Tech University researchers found there are three main reasons people sext: to use it as foreplay for sexual behavior later on; for the relationship assurance they receive from their partner; and some do it as a favor, with expectations the favor will be returned later in a non-sexual way (like in the form of a dinner date).

These three reasons came up in equal amounts, suggesting no one motivation is more common than the others, and 75 percent of people said they sexted for non-sexual purposes.
