UPDATE (August 23, 2023):
The Allen County Coroner says that a man who was hit by a car early Sunday morning at Smith and Engle has died.
The coroner identified the man as 23-year-old Jamie Corona Vaca of Fort Wayne.
Just before 3 a.m., emergency crews at the scene found Vaca in life-threatening condition.
The coroner says the cause of his death was multiple blunt force injuries from the crash, and his death was ruled an accident.

On Sunday, August 20th, 2023, the Allen County Coroner’s Office was notified of a pedestrian versus motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Smith Road at Engle Road, in Fort Wayne. The person was transported to a local hospital and was later pronounced deceased.
The pedestrian who was struck was identified as Jamie Corona Vaca, 23, male, Hispanic of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Notification has been made to the next of kin. The Cause of Death has been determined to be Multiple Blunt Force Injuries due to Pedestrian Versus Motor Vehicle Crash and the Manner of Death is ruled an Accident.
Jamie Corona Vaca is the 23rd traffic fatality for Allen County for 2023.
This incident is under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – A man has life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle Sunday morning.
The Fort Wayne Police Department says that at approximately 2:55 am., first responders were called to the intersection of Smith Road and Engle Road following reports of a pedestrian hit by a vehicle.
The FWPD says the male victim was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the vehicle was the one that alerted police. They are reportedly cooperating and police do not think alcohol was involved.
Fort Wayne Police Department officials released the following:
On, August 20th, 2023, at approximately 3:00 am, the Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) responded to the intersection of Engle and Smith Roads in reference to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. Upon arrival, the FWPD confirmed that a person had been hit by a vehicle. The driver of the vehicle reported the incident to the FWPD.
The driver stayed at the scene and was cooperative. Investigators believe that alcohol was not a contributing factor. Later, hospital staff informed investigating officers that the male victim’s condition was determined to be life-threatening.
This incident remains under investigation by the FWPD, the FWPD’s F.A.C.T., and the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
