UPDATE (March 17, 2023):
We now know the identity of a man who was fatally struck by a train in DeKalb County. It is unclear why but police say that Jimmy D. Taylor III was running on the tracks late Wednesday night near US 6 and County Road 47.
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office released the following:
The male was Identified as Jimmy D. Taylor III from Waterloo IN. The DeKalb County Corner was contacted, and will be completing their investigation. Norfolk Southern Police were contacted, and handled the incident. A death notification to Jimmy’s family has been completed.

DEKALB CO., Ind. (ADAMS) – The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office says that a man was killed when he was hit by a train Wednesday night.
According to a release to the media, a call from Norfolk Southern just before midnight had alerted police that a man was seen on the train tracks. By the time they arrived, police say the man had been hit by an Amtrak train traveling at a speed of over 75 mph.
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office says that the train was heading eastbound close to US 6 and CR 47 where the man was struck while allegedly running on the tracks.
He was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released.
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office released the following:
At approximately 11:58 p.m. on March 15, 2023, DeKalb County Central Communications was contacted
by Norfolk Southern in reference to an individual that was trespassing on the train tracks. While a deputy was en
route to the complaint, another call was received advising that the male had been struck by an Amtrak train near
US 6 and CR 47. It was determined the Amtrak train was traveling eastbound at approximately 77 mph and struck
the male while he was running on the tracks. he male was located and pronounced dead on the scene. The
DeKalb County Coroner’s Office has not yet identified the male.
