UPDATE (June 16, 2023):
Indiana State Police released the following update identifying the man who died in the Grant County Jail earlier this week.
ISP issued the following:
Monday, June 12, 2023, Indiana State Police Detective Brent Ingram initiated an investigation, at the request of the Grant County Sheriff Del Garcia, into the death of inmate Russell D. Stalling, 46, Marion, IN.
At approximately 10:13 p.m., Grant County Detention Deputies were notified of a medical emergency. Detention Deputies located Stalling and began administering medical treatment, including CPR. First responders arrived and transported Stalling to Marion Health Hospital.
Stalling was later pronounced deceased at the hospital and notification to his family has been made.
This investigation is still ongoing, and an autopsy has been scheduled.

GRANT CO., Ind. (ADAMS) – Indiana State Police are now investigating the death of an inmate who collapsed Monday night in the Grant County Jail.
Inmates told Grant County Detention deputies that there was a medical emergency in the cell block around 10:13 p.m., according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies moved him to the medical room of the jail, administering CPR and medical aid. First responders continued treatment and the man was then taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to a press release.
Sheriff Garcia and his staff were notified immediately and responded to this event. The inmate had been in the Grant County Jail since April 7th. The Grant County Coroner’s Office and the Indiana State Police were requested to investigate the death by Sheriff Garcia.
The inmate had been in the jail since April 7 although it is unclear why he was being held.
The sheriff’s office says they are not sharing the inmate’s name out of respect for the family’s privacy.

On June 12th, 2023, at approximately 10:13 pm, an inmate collapsed in the Grant County Jail and was taken to Marion Health by ambulance, where the inmate was pronounced deceased.
Grant County Detention deputies were alerted by inmates of a medical emergency in the cell block. Detention Deputies rushed into the area and began assisting the inmate. The inmate was moved to the medical room of the Grant County Jail, where they continued to administer medical aid, including CPR. Marion Health’s first responders continued the medical treatment and transported him to the hospital.
Sheriff Garcia and his staff were notified immediately and responded to this event. The inmate had been in the Grant County Jail since April 7th. The Grant County Coroner’s Office and the Indiana State Police were requested to investigate the death by Sheriff Garcia.
The inmate’s name is being withheld out of respect for the family and their privacy. Our condolences and prayers are with the family.
