FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Fort Wayne Curling Club announced that it has acquired the former Habitat for Humanity ReStore building located at 3837 North Wells Street. The club will spend the next 10 months converting the building into a 4-sheet curling facility with a grand opening scheduled for September 2019.
The Fort Wayne Curling club currently leases the former Nickle’s Bakery Thrift Shop and Distribution Center located at 3674 North Wells Street. “While our current facility is a great facility that has helped the club grow significantly since its opening in January 2014, the fact that the facility is leased rather than owned and the smaller size of the facility inhibits the ability of the club to grow to its full potential.” said club co-founder Craig Fischer, “This new facility will allow us to bring our facility up to par with some of the better curling facilities in the United States such as those in Chicago and Detroit.”
The new facility encompasses a 15,600 sq. ft. warehouse that will house the ice room and warm room (for off-ice socialization) and a 1,100 sq. ft. house that will contain the club’s changing rooms and restrooms. The facility will provide sufficient room in the ice room to expand to 4 curling sheets and the warm room will be more than three times the size of the club’s current warm room. These changes will enable the club to support more people in leagues, accommodate more people in its public “Learn to Curl” sessions, expand its Special Needs Curling Program, host larger tournaments and larger private/corporate events.
The Fort Wayne Curling Club is the only facility dedicated exclusively to the Olympic sport of Curling in the State of Indiana and within 150-mile radius of Fort Wayne. The new facility will be one of just a handful of 4 curling sheet facilities in the States of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Michigan.
The club will complete the 2018-2019 curling season in its current facility in April 2019 and move the ice equipment to its new facility thereafter. The club’s capital campaign to fund the conversion of the new building to a curling club is underway.
