FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Fort Wayne Police Department says one man is facing charges after leading officers on a chase on Thursday.
The FWPD says the man was reportedly having a mental health incident in that vehicle on the 5700 block of St. Joe Road just after noon. While officers were approaching, the man took off.
Police used stop sticks, and the vehicle eventually stopped at West Coliseum and Executive Boulevard.
The following was released:
Officers with the Fort Wayne Police Department were dispatched to a business in the 5700 block of St. Joe Road regarding a vehicle that had been parked on the property for an extended period. Upon arrival, officers learned the individual inside the vehicle had been reported missing out of Michigan and appeared to be experiencing a mental health crisis.
While officers were confirming this information, the adult male fled the scene in his vehicle. A low-speed pursuit followed until officers deployed stop sticks on Coliseum Boulevard near Sherman, deflating all four tires.
The vehicle came to a stop on West Coliseum Boulevard near Executive Boulevard.
Officers attempted to persuade the individual to exit the vehicle, but he refused to respond.
The Emergency Services Team (EST), Crisis Response Team (CRT), and Air Support Unit (ASU) were called to assist in de-escalating the situation. The individual eventually exited the vehicle and was taken into custody by EST. He will be transported to a hospital for evaluation.
