FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – City Utilities says that work to upgrade water service along West Jefferson Boulevard between Ardmore Avenue and Taylor Street is scheduled to start Wednesday, February 25, 2026.
Crews will install a new 12-inch water main along one side of the roadway and upgrade service connections on both sides to improve long-term reliability for businesses and homes along this corridor.
City Utilities released the following:
This section of pipe has experienced significant breaks in recent years. Those failures resulted in large volumes of water entering the roadway and, during colder months, created icy conditions that affected traffic and safety.
The project is part of a larger neighborhood project for the Westwood-Fairway Community Association. In all, 9,000 feet of new water main will be installed along with new fire hydrants on West Jefferson and North Washington Road west of Ardmore.
This work is part of the 70 miles of water main replacement City Utilities announced last year as part of a five-year system-wide renewal strategy. The initiative focuses on proactively replacing aging infrastructure in high-impact areas to strengthen reliability, protect major corridors, and reduce the likelihood of future large-scale failures.
West Jefferson Traffic Impacts Between Ardmore and Taylor
Lane restrictions are expected to be in place through the end of May.
Throughout construction:
- At least one eastbound and one westbound lane will remain open at all times.
- The inside lanes (closest to the center) on both sides of the road will be open to through traffic.
- Access to all businesses and professional offices will be maintained.
- Where turn lanes exist, they will be used as work zones.
- When a turn lane is used for construction, the adjacent travel lane will serve as the temporary turn lane.
- In areas without a dedicated turn lane, the outside lanes will be closed as a work zone.
Traffic patterns could shift as work progresses. Nearly 29,000 vehicles use this section of West Jefferson each day. Motorists should plan for additional travel time or use alternative routes, particularly during peak hours.
Construction schedules are weather-dependent and may adjust as needed.
