CORUNNA, Ind. (ADAMS) – The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of 35-year-old Shana Umbreit of Michigan, whose body was found Friday. Umbreit had been reported missing from her home nearly 300 miles away on the Lake Huron coast on January 25th. The sheriff’s office says her death is being investigated as a homicide.
Umbreit was killed in Michigan, and her body was found in DeKalb County.
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office released the following:
On February 13, 2026, at 1118 hrs., the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 2100 block of County Road 17, Corunna, Indiana, on the report of a possible deceased person being located. A local resident advised that while he was walking in the area, he noticed the body lying in the snow. Deputies arrived in the area and located a deceased individual in a marshy area a short distance off County Road 17.
Through investigation, later that same evening, detectives believed the individual to be that of a thirty-five-year-old missing female from Harbor Beach, Michigan, approximately 270 miles northeast of Corunna, Indiana.
Detectives contacted The Harbor Beach Police Department regarding the discovery. It was determined that Shana M. Umbreit, was reported missing on January 25, 2026, and was believed to be in extreme danger.
Forensic testing confirmed the identify of the deceased female to be Shana M. Umbreit. An autopsy determined Shana’s manner of death to be homicide.
This is believed to be an isolated incident and the homicide occurred in Michigan. The joint investigation between Indiana and Michigan law enforcement authorities is still ongoing.
