FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Fort Wayne Fire Department says that one woman is dead after a fire broke out early Sunday morning in an apartment complex on the city’s southwest side.
The Fort Wayne Fire Department was dispatched to 5939 Meadows Drive in the Coventry Court West Apartments just after 4 a.m., after reports of an apartment fire.
Crews arrived on scene around 4 a.m. and found smoke coming from one of the apartments.
According to the FWFD, residents who were able to get out but informed firefighters of a woman still inside the apartment.
The department says they were able to find the woman and attempt life-saving measures. However, fire officials say she died at the scene.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Fort Wayne firefighters responded to a reported apartment fire at the above address. First arriving firefighters found smoke and fire coming from one of the apartments. Firefighters were able to get into the structure for fire attack and search and rescue activities. Residents on scene that were able to self-evacuate reported to firefighters that there was still a female in the fire apartment that was unaccounted for. Firefighters were able to locate the woman. Life saving measures performed by firefighters and TRAA medics on scene were unsuccessful. One resident was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. As of the time of this report, it is not clear how many residents were home at the time of the fire or how many will be displaced.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
