UPDATE (January 6, 2026):
(ADAMS) – Federal health officials say the U.S. has seen a major spike in the number of flu cases in December. The latest data from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) shows over 3,100 people died from the virus in the U.S. in 2025. The agency called this flu season the most severe since 2018.
The agency said the flu was responsible for 279 pediatric deaths. In the U.S., as of December 20th, there have been an estimated 7.5 million flu cases and 81,000 hospitalizations.

Indiana and Ohio are among 29 states experiencing a “very high” level of flu activity.
Health officials also warn that cases are likely to climb as kids return to school this week following the winter break. Experts are urging people to get the flu vaccine and to stay home from work or school if they are feeling sick.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (ADAMS) – State health officials are reporting a rapid rise in flu hospitalizations.
The Ohio Department of Health says nearly 1,500 people were admitted for complications related to the illness during the week of December 27th, up from roughly 750 hospitalizations the week prior.
Doctors also warn that cases are likely to climb as kids return to school this week following the winter break. Experts are urging Ohioans to get the flu vaccine and to stay home from work or school if they are feeling sick.
