FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Mayor Sharon Tucker welcomed the Fort Wayne Fire Department’s newest recruit classes on Monday to their first day of training at the Public Safety Academy.
There are 14 FWFD recruits in the 98th class and 16 FWFD recruits in the 99th class. Additionally, two firefighters are attending from the Huntington Fire Department.
The City of Fort Wayne released the following:
Twenty-one percent of the FWFD’s 98th recruit class are in an ethnic minority group, including three males–one who identifies as Black, one male who identifies as Hispanic or Latino, and one male that identifies as Asian. One female who identifies as white is also included in the class.
Forty-three percent of the FWFD’s 99th recruit class are in an ethnic minority group, including six males who identify as Black, one male who identifies as Hispanic or Latino, two males that identify as Asian, and two males that identify as two or more races. One female is also included in the class and identifies as black.
Members of the 98th recruit class are currently nationally registered emergency medical technicians and will participate in 13 weeks of fire-based training before their graduation day on February 26, 2026 .
The 99th recruit class will participate in 21 weeks of training before their graduation day on April 23, 2026.
Participants will obtain the following seven certifications after completing the rigorous, hands-on training:
Fire Fighter I
Fire Fighter II
Emergency Medical Technician (Basic)
Hazardous Materials
Technical Rescue
FEMA National Incident Management System
Fire Apparatus Driver Operator
