FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – On Friday, Mayor Sharon Tucker, joined by residents, nearby business owners, and representatives from the City of Fort Wayne’s Public Works Division, celebrated the completion of the Fairfax Avenue Reconstruction Project in the Mount Vernon Park Neighborhood with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
“The investment made in the Mount Vernon Park Neighborhood is a great example of high-trust partnerships and collaboration with the end result being an enhanced quality of life for our residents,” said Mayor Tucker. “Improving neighborhood infrastructure is a leading priority to help ensure we remain viable now and in the future as an attractive community that’s fun, family-friendly, and safe for individuals, families, and businesses. Making transportation enhancements has an impact on economic development opportunities and positions us for growth and success.”

The project focused on improvements to Fairfax Avenue between Hanna Street and Gaywood Drive. The chip and seal street was replaced with asphalt. New curbs and ADA curb ramps, new sidewalks on both side of the road, new drive approaches, new street lighting and additional storm inlets were included. The Public Works Division worked with Bridge of Grace Ministries and Fort Wayne Community Schools to ensure the project complemented recent investments in the area made by both entities, including construction of an early learning center, community health clinic and the expansion of the Levan Scott Academy, as well as the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department’s recent renovation of Brewer Park.

The project investment was $1.07 million. This year the Public Works Division is investing $41.4 million in neighborhood infrastructure improvements to enhance the local transportation system and improve the quality of life for residents.
