WASHINGTON D.C. (ADAMS) – Tens of thousands of federal workers are on furlough as a government shutdown enters day two.
The federal government shutdown is now in its second day with no evidence of movement from either side. It all started just after midnight on Wednesday. Lawmakers held procedural votes on two competing funding measures, with both failing. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that around 750,000 federal employees could be furloughed as a result of the impasse.
Federal employees whose jobs do not protect life or property will be told not to come to work. Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and the U.S. Postal Service will continue operating. Air traffic controllers, TSA agents, ICE officers, prison staff and active-duty military members are expected to continue working without pay, but will receive back pay when the shutdown is over.
