INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – Health officials say Indiana is seeing a large increase in a synthetic opioid that is 100 times more powerful than fentanyl. There have been 246 detections of carfentanil so far this year, up from 138 last year and five in 2023.
It was found in toxicology results from deadly drug overdoses 26 times this year, up from 24 last year and eight in 2023.
It has been found in heroin, meth, cocaine, and counterfeit Adderall, oxycodone, and Xanax.
The Indiana Department of Health released data on the increase.
