FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) says it has received a $50,000.00 grant from AWS Foundation to provide much-needed accessibility improvements to Safety Village.
“A field trip to Safety Village is a beloved memory for most of Allen County’s youth,” says AWS Foundation CEO Patti Hays. “These improvements will ensure that no student is left back in the classroom due to lack of accessibility and sensory accommodations. And that every student learns a little bit more about building a town that is accessible to those with disabilities.”
The FWPD released the following:
Currently, the Village lacks essential features that support inclusivity. The AWS Foundation grant will fund equipment to remove these barriers by incorporating adaptive play equipment, sensory-friendly spaces, and an interactive pedestrian safety system, ensuring every child, regardless of physical or cognitive ability, can engage in safe and meaningful play.
The grant will provide for the purchase and installation of adaptive playground equipment, audible voice crosswalks, a remote-controlled battery-operated car, and a wheelchair accessible battery-operated car. Through this project, we anticipate increased playground usage, improved social integration among children of all abilities, improved safety education, and a strengthened sense of community.
The Fort Wayne Police Department would like to thank AWS Foundation for their generous grant and their support in our mission to make the City of Fort Wayne a safe place for everyone.
