INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – Enlistment in the Indiana National Guard has dropped 38 percent from 2019 to 2023. Adjutant General Larry Muennich told a state Senate committee this week that 77-percent of Hoosier youth are not qualified for service due to things including criminal history, medical standards, or their education level.
He was speaking in support of legislation to add active duty soldiers to the definition of a state employee for worker’s compensation and death benefits, and would increase the funeral payout from nearly $9,000 to $20,000. The adjutant general would also be able to procure health insurance for National Guard members ordered to active duty.
