FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Eight people safely evacuated a home on Vesey Ave. following a fire early Wednesday morning.
The fire broke out shortly after 1 a.m. in the 3200 block of Vesey, near Bluffton Rd. and Broadway. When fire crews arrived, they found heavy smoke billowing from the house. Inside, they discovered a small fire in the basement, which took about 25 minutes to bring under control.
Seven adults and one child were inside the home when the fire started, along with several pets, all of whom managed to escape safely.
The house sustained moderate damage from fire, water, and smoke. Fire officials noted that the damage could have been worse if not for a broken water line, which helped suppress the flames. Residents also used a fire extinguisher before the fire crews arrived to help contain the blaze.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though officials suspect it may have been sparked by a space heater placed too close to flammable materials.
The FWFD released the following:
FWFD was dispatched on a possible basement fire. Upon first engine arrival of a 1 story small residential they found a decent amount of smoke coming from the structure. The crew pulled a hose line into structure for fire attack. Another crew did a simultaneous search of home with nothing found. A small fire was found in basement. The fire could have been larger if not for a broken water line which assisted with extinguishment as well as the occupants stating they discharged a fire extinguisher on the fire prior to fire dept. arrival. All occupants and pets that were in the structure escaped safely. The fire is under investigation, however, it appears it was possibly a space heater to close to combustibles. Fire department was assisted by Neighborhood code, AEP,NIPSCO, TRAA and possibly Red Cross.
