FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Fort Wayne Fire Department officials say that three people made it out of a home after flames broke out in a garage and attic on Monday afternoon.
Firefighters responded to the 6900 block of Selkirk Drive on the city’s southeast side just after 4 p.m. on reports of a structure fire. It took about 20 minutes for firefighters to get control. Once inside, they found a cat that had died in the blaze.
FWFD firefighters then had to make sure all the hot spots were extinguished. The home had moderate fire and water damage but was heavily damaged by smoke. sustained significant smoke damage.
Fire officials believed the fire was caused by unattended cooking in the garage.

Fort Wayne Fire Dept. was dispatched this afternoon on a reported structure fire in a residential garage. A large amount of fire was coming from the garage and possibly extending into the attic when the first engine arrived at a small single story residence. Multiple hose lines were advanced into the structure to quickly knock down the flames. A quick search of the structure revealed nothing found but a little later into the scene a deceased cat was found. All 3 adult occupants had exited the structure safely prior to the fire dept. arrival. A large amount of overhaul had to be completed to make sure all hot spots in structure were out. There was heavy smoke damage through out structure. Upon investigation the fire was deemed to be started by unattended cooking in garage. FWFD was assisted by Red Cross, FWPD, TRAA, Neighborhood code and utility companies.
