FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – With forecasts predicting single-digit temperatures next week, City Utilities reminds customers that pipes and water meters can freeze, causing significant damage and costly repairs and leaving residents without water for days.
City Utilities released the following tips to help residents protect their homes:
• If your water meter is in an unheated garage, keep the garage door closed to retain warmth, and consider wrapping the meter with an old blanket or towel for added protection.
• Residents with an outdoor water meter should ensure the meter lid is not broken or missing. Damage to water meters can lead to costly repairs for homeowners.
• Run a small trickle of lukewarm water to keep water moving through the meter and pipes. The flow should be about the diameter of a pencil lead.
• Know where your master valve or main water shut-off valve is located so you can quickly turn off water to your home if a pipe breaks.
Taking these simple steps can help prevent damage and avoid disruptions to water service.
