FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control is warning residents about a potential scam where someone pretends to be an employee with FWACC saying in posts on various social media such as PawBoost, Craigslist, Nextdoor, etc., that their pet is missing and needs medical attention. The fake post will then go on to ask for money to pay for the pet’s medical care.
Representatives with Animal Care and Control released the following:
Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control would like to warn pet owners of a potential scam portraying to be an employee from our shelter. Individuals who have posted on various social media, PawBoost, Craigslist, Nextdoor, etc., that their pet is missing have been contacted advising their pet needs medical attention and they need to pay various amounts for their pet to be treated.
FWACC cannot treat personally owned pets for a medical emergency and would only be able to assist with transporting their injured pets to their private veterinarian for services. FWACC would not request payment over the phone for medical services.
If you are missing your pet, FWACC would like to remind individuals to ensure they have completed a lost report with our agency. FWACC encourages all pet owners to update your contact information with the microchip company to assist with the safe return of your pet.
