FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The FWFD say that two dogs died in a Northside house fire.
Fire department crews were sent to the home in the 8200 block of Westridge Road around 4 p.m. Sunday. When they arrived flames were reportedly coming from the back of the home.
All of the people inside the home escaped along with four dogs, but two others died inside. The fire’s cause is still being investigated.
Fire officials released the following:
FWFD was dispatched on a residence fire. Thick black smoke was seen from miles away against the clear blue sky. When fire crews arrived, they found heavy fire involvement coming from the back of the house.
Back of house 3 season room, great room and kitchen
Occupants of the home were out front. Smoke detectors did alert the occupants enabling them to get out safely. The occupant stated that he was able to get 4 dogs out but 2 were still inside. These 2 dogs were later found. An attempt to resuscitate them by fire fighters was unsuccessful.
Fire crews did a rapid check of structure with nothing additional found. Fire crews found a large amount of fire in the back 3 season room, great room and kitchen but were able to rapidly extinguish. Water supply was initially a concern in the non-hydrant area, so tankers were started.
However, due to the quick extinguishment they were not needed. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. FWFD was assisted by AEP, NIPSCO, Neighborhood Code, Animal Control and TRAA as well as FWPD.
