A fire at a Ukrainian nuclear power plant is out, according to the Ukrainian State Emergency Service. The Zaporizhzia plant had caught fire amid fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces. The plant is reportedly “secured” and “still has essential functions,” according to the International Atomic Energy Agency. A spokesperson at the plant also says the fighting around the plant has stopped, and radiation levels near the plant are currently normal. Andrii Tuz told CNN that it’s not yet known if the plant suffered any critical damage.
While sweeping economic sanctions on Russia are having a “profound impact,” says President Biden. He called the sanctions unprecedented. Biden opened a Cabinet meeting yesterday and announced new sanctions on Russian oligarchs. He said the latest measures will further squeeze Russia’s economic sector. The President said the American people are united in support of Ukraine as it fights back against Russia’s massive invasion. The Biden administration calls the newly-sanctioned individuals “cronies” of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
