FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Fort Wayne Fire Department says one person is hospitalized with life-threatening injuries suffered in an explosion at an assisted living facility Sunday evening.
Firefighters responded just before 5:30 p.m. to the blast and fire at Memorial Park Estates. What caused the explosion is not yet clear. The building has been condemned due to sustaining significant water damage and the Red Cross is helping people find temporary homes.
The FWFD released the following:
Fort Wayne Fire department was called to the scene of an apartment fire. Crews arrived on scene and found light smoke coming out of the second floor. The sprinkler system had kept the fire under control but there was heavy water damage throughout the building. FWFD aided medical care to one person who was transported to the hospital. The conditions of the building caused it to be condemned by the building department. The Red Cross will be helping the residents to find temporary housing. FWFD was assisted by TRAA, NIPSCO, AEP, Neighborhood code enforcement, Allen County building department, FWPD and Fort Wayne Communications.
