The FWPD put out the following:
UPDATE: Officer-involved shooting on Chadwick Drive Officers were dispatched to the home in the 6800 block of Chadwick Dr. after a caller reported that an individual was experiencing a mental health crisis and behaving violently.
The caller told dispatchers he had destroyed a television and an iPad and was destroying his room. Officers attempted to speak with the adult male individual, but he refused. While officers spoke with the caller to gather additional information, the individual left his bedroom, entered the kitchen and grabbed a large chef’s knife. Officers gave clear commands to drop the knife. When he did not comply, an officer deployed a Taser.
The Taser was ineffective and the individual continued to advance toward that officer with the knife in hand. Two FWPD officers fired their handguns in attempt to stop the threat, striking him. Officers immediately requested an ambulance and provided medical aid, including applying chest seals and a tourniquet. Three Rivers Ambulance Authority medics transported him to a hospital, where he remains with life-threatening injuries at the time of this release.
The FWPD Homicide Team and Crime Scene Unit responded to investigate. Indiana State Police detectives also responded to conduct a separate, parallel investigation. The two officers who fired their weapons were placed on five days of administrative leave, as required by standard protocol. During that period, Internal Affairs investigators, FWPD homicide detectives and Indiana State Police detectives will interview the officers. Before they are cleared to return to duty, the officers will undergo a psychological assessment by a licensed psychiatrist. The findings of these investigations will be sent to the Allen County Prosecutors Office for review. The incident remains under investigation by the FWPD Homicide Team, Indiana State Police and the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office.
