DEKALB CO., Ind. (ADAMS) – One man has died after hitting a fence and a utility pole with his car in DeKalb County early Sunday morning.
The driver was identified as 55-year-old Jose Vargas Jr. Police say he was driving southbound on County Road 327 when he left the road and crashed. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say they believe alcohol and speed were factors in the crash near Garrett.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fatal single-vehicle crash in the 6000 block of County Road 327 near Garrett, Indiana.A Buick Lucerne was traveling southbound when, for an unknown reason, it left the roadway and struck a metal wire fence on the north side of the road. The vehicle continued southbound, hitting multiple fence posts before colliding with a large utility pole.
Upon arrival, first responders located the driver inside the vehicle. The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Preliminary findings indicate that speed and alcohol could be contributing factors.
The crash remains under investigation.
