FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Allen County Public Library (ACPL) is introducing a new way to celebrate one of childhood’s earliest milestones: a very first library card.
The new Child’s First Library Card features a kid-friendly design created especially for children receiving their first library card.
“Getting your first library card is a big deal,” said Marketing Manager Chris Ford. “We wanted to create something that feels special for families — something they can celebrate, share with family and friends, and remember for years to come. It’s the start of a lifelong relationship with reading and learning.”
The following was released:
Available beginning at birth, the card gives families the opportunity to start building early literacy from day one. A child’s first library card is more than just a way to check out books — it’s a rite of passage. The ACPL’s card is designed to make that moment even more memorable, encouraging families to celebrate together while opening the door to stories, learning, and discovery.
Parents and caregivers can obtain the Child’s First Library Card for their child as soon as they are born. The card provides full access to ACPL’s extensive collection of books, board books, audiobooks, music, movies, digital resources, and early literacy materials, as well as free programs and events designed for children and families. ACPL staff can assist parents in linking their child’s card to their own account to track checkouts, due dates, and more.
Early literacy experts emphasize that reading to children from birth supports brain development, language skills, and school readiness. By offering library cards at birth, ACPL reinforces its commitment to supporting families during the critical early years. ACPL librarians are available to assist parents in choosing age-appropriate books to read to their children at various phases in their literacy journey.

According to Ford, although the cards are designed and marketed with children in mind, anyone can choose the art:
“We’ve had several adults choose the card because it is the first time they’ve had a library card in their entire life. You’re never too old to get your first card and become a “library kid!”
