INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – Hoosier voters will decide in November if they want to amend the state constitution to allow judges to deny bail for some defendants.
The Indiana House gave the proposed amendment final legislative approval this week with a 75-to-11 vote. The Senate passed it last month.
If approved, it will allow courts to deny bail to people when judges determine that no release conditions would reasonably protect public safety. Critics warn it could open the door to bias and abuse in courts before someone is convicted.
