An update on this incident. The driver of the passenger vehicle has died at the hospital. Identity and cause of death will be released the Allen County Coroner’s Office.
ORIGINAL STORY:
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Fort Wayne Police Department says that a driver was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after a crash early Friday morning.
The FWPD says that officers were called shortly before 5 a.m. to Illinois and Sutton Avenue. Officers found a sedan with heavy damage in the front, where it had run into a semi truck. The driver was trapped in the vehicle, and it took about 20 minutes to extract them. They were taken to the hospital in critical condition but were downgraded upon arrival.
The truck driver was not hurt. Police think that speed may have played a role in the crash.
The westbound lanes of Illinois Road were closed for about four hours. The roadway was reopened at 8:50 am.

The Fort Wayne Police Department responded to a report of a crash in the area of Illinois Rd & Sutton Ave on Friday, October 24, 2025, at approximately 4:45 am. Officers arrived on- scene to locate a sedan with heavy front-end damage and a semi stopped near the crash. Fort Wayne Fire Department was able to extract the trapped driver from the sedan within approximately 19 minutes after arriving on-scene. The driver was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Doctors at the hospital downgraded the driver’s condition to life-threatening.
Initial information indicates the sedan and the semi were both traveling westbound on Illinois Rd. The sedan crashed into the rear of the semi’s trailer. It is currently unknown why the sedan crashed into the semi. The speed of the sedan may be a factor. The driver of the semi is cooperating with the investigation.
