UPDATE (December 12, 2025):
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – An effort to redraw Indiana’s congressional maps has failed. The Indiana Senate voted 31 to 19 against House Bill 1032 on Thursday.
The ten Democrats in the Indiana Senate voted against the measure, plus 21 Indiana Senate Republicans. Legislation to redistrict cannot be proposed again until after the regular legislative session ends, which is expected sometime in March of 2026.
The failed redistricting bid came after President Trump and Vice President JD Vance encouraged Indiana lawmakers to redraw the state’s maps ahead of next year’s midterm elections.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – A final reading is expected for Indiana’s redistricting bill today. The Indiana Senate approved a second reading of the measure on Wednesday afternoon. Democrats proposed three amendments to House Bill 1032, but all were rejected. If approved by the full Senate without any amendments, the bill would next head to Governor Braun’s desk for signing. If the bill is passed and then signed into law, it would allow the Indiana General Assembly to significantly change the state’s congressional maps before the 2026 midterms.

Meanwhile, President Trump is continuing to pressure Indiana state lawmakers to approve newly GOP-drawn congressional maps. In a post on Truth Social Wednesday night, Trump said Senate Republican Leader Rod Bray and his friends won’t be in politics for long if they don’t do what’s necessary to “save our country.”
The president added that unless the redrawn maps are approved, Republicans will lose everything to the Democrats. He said that anybody who votes against redistricting will be met with a MAGA primary in the spring. Earlier this week, a panel of state lawmakers advanced a GOP-drawn congressional map to a state Senate vote.

Instead of helping families with soaring utility bills, unaffordable housing, child care shortages, or rising health costs, House Republicans chose to rig maps so Washington insiders can decide what is best for Hoosiers.”“This bill tears apart communities, strips voters of representation they voted for and hands control to national figures who are more interested in cementing absolute power rather than solving any problems. Hoosiers should pick their leaders. Politicians should not redraw the map to pick the voters. Hoosiers don’t cheat and this bill does.”
UPDATE (December 3, 2025):
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Indiana House Elections and Apportionment Committee has passed a bill to redraw the state’s congressional maps.
Republican Senator Mike Bohacek says he remains against the redistricting, noting he is standing against President Trump, who used slurs against Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and says Trump’s “choices of words have consequences.”
Just two people spoke in favor of the maps at the committee hearing, with 43 speaking in opposition. Republican Representative Ben Smaltz told committee members the maps are “politically gerrymandered,” but said they did not use racial information to create them.
It is still unclear if the map will be considered in the Senate.

UPDATE (December 2, 2025):
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – Indiana state House Republicans are releasing their draft of a new congressional map.
The new map could net the GOP a seat in the state’s first and seventh Congressional Districts, which are currently held by democrats.
While it’s unclear whether the map has enough support to pass the state Senate, Indiana House Speaker Todd Huston asserted last week that his caucus has the votes to move forward.
The Indiana House is expected to gavel in Monday afternoon for the start of its 2026 legislative session.

Senate Democratic Leader Shelli Yoder (D-Bloomington), speaking for the Indiana Senate Democratic Caucus, issued the following statement Tuesday after House Republicans released their proposed congressional map:
“The map is out, and Hoosiers deserve honesty about what it represents. This is not redistricting. It is rigging. House Republicans did not draw this map to reflect the will of the people. They drew it to produce results that President Trump wants. It is cheating, not competing, and it strips Hoosiers of the most basic power they have in a democracy: the ability to choose who represents them.
“While families across Indiana are asking for help with rising utility bills, housing costs that price them out of their communities, health care and child care they cannot afford, this proposed map focuses on protecting one man by taking power away from Hoosiers and handing it to D.C. insiders. They ignored the issues Hoosiers begged them to address and spent their time creating a political map that protects themselves instead of the people they serve.
“Our democracy works only when voters choose their leaders. It collapses when politicians erase elected officials, redraw districts for their friends and cheat the system to replace your choice with theirs. No president, no party and no rigged map created behind closed doors can replace the voice of the people. Hoosiers built this state. Hoosiers power this state. And Hoosiers will not be erased from this state.”
UPDATE (November 19, 2025):
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Indiana Senate has voted 29-to-18 to reconvene at the Statehouse for their next session on January 5, 2026. Governor Mike Braun had called on them to meet next month to consider redrawing the state’s congressional districts for the 2026 election, but majority Republicans say the votes to pass that are not there.
Redistricting happens every ten years after the U.S. Census, but President Trump and Vice President Vance had been pushing Hoosiers to do it early.

UPDATE (November 18, 2025):
WASHINGTON, D.C. (ADAMS) – Criticism of Indiana Republicans is still ongoing from the White House. President Donald Trump continues to post about GOP state lawmakers after a redistricting special session never got off the ground.
The president wanted Indiana to redraw its congressional maps before the midterms.
The president took to Truth Social writing, “I will be strongly endorsing against any State Senator or House member from the Great State of Indiana that votes against the Republican Party, and our Nation, by not allowing for Redistricting for Congressional seats.”
Trump has lashed out at Indiana state Senator Gregory Goode and state Senate President Pro Tempore Rodric Bray for opposing the efforts, as well as suggesting Governor Mike Braun was not doing enough to galvanize support.
Texas, Missouri, North Carolina and Ohio have all passed new maps that could benefit the GOP in adding potential pickup opportunities.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – A nonprofit with ties to President Trump is going after Indiana Senate Republicans who are undecided on whether they support redistricting the state’s congressional maps.
Fair Maps Indiana is launching a six-figure advertising effort to try to get lawmakers to redo the maps early for the 2026 election. Chair Marty Obst says they will be targeting the districts of undeclared GOP senators “to educate voters and urge them to contact their Senator and urge passage of redistricting.” Senate leaders say the votes to redistrict the state aren’t there.

UPDATE (November 7, 2025):
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – Indiana voters do not want state lawmakers to redraw the congressional maps early, according to a new poll.
The poll was done for Indiana Conservation Voters, a group against the redistricting, and finds 51 percent oppose it and 39 percent support redoing the districts before the 2026 election. Of the 51 percent opposed, 45 percent say they are “strongly opposed” to it.
President Trump and Vice President Vance have been pressuring Hoosier Republicans to redistrict the state now instead of waiting until the 2030 Census is done.

UPDATE (November 4, 2025):
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Indiana General Assembly will hold its regularly scheduled legislative session from December 1st through the 12th and will consider mid-cycle redistricting at that time. Governor Mike Braun last week called for them to hold a special session this month on redistricting, but Republican leaders say they don’t want to cost taxpayers more money.
Their last special session in 2022 lasted two weeks and cost Hoosier taxpayers $240,000 in per-diem and travel expenses.
President Trump and Vice President Vance have been active trying to convince Republican lawmakers to redraw Indiana’s congressional boundaries for the 2026 election.

UPDATE (October 30, 2025):
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – State lawmakers who have been called into a special session on redistricting are not expected to meet on Monday.
Indiana House Speaker Todd Huston says the legislature will not be convening on November 3rd- so the timeline to redraw Indiana’s congressional maps will need to be pushed back.
This comes after Governor Mike Braun called for the special session on Monday. Indiana law says the special session will last 30 session days or 40 calendar days, whichever is shorter.

UPDATE (October 28, 2025):
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – Indiana Governor Mike Braun is calling a special session to redraw the state’s congressional maps.
The White House has lobbied for the Hoosier state to redraw its congressional lines, with Vice President Vance traveling to the state twice and President Trump speaking with lawmakers directly about redistricting earlier this month.
Braun issued a statement on Monday announcing, “a special legislative session to protect Hoosiers from efforts in other states that seek to diminish their voice in Washington and ensure their representation in Congress is fair.”
Texas and Missouri Republicans have already passed new maps to add additional opportunities ahead of the midterms, while California Democrats are also working on their own redistricting efforts to combat their GOP counterparts.
The governor has now ordered state lawmakers to convene on November 3rd.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – Governor Mike Braun may announce a special legislative session today. Fox 59 reports the governor will call the Indiana General Assembly back into session to consider redistricting the state.
The session to consider redrawing the Hoosier state’s congressional maps would start on November 3rd, according to the report. State lawmakers and Governor Braun have been discussing a potential special session for weeks.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – A spokesperson for the Republican Indiana Senate says there is not enough support to redistrict Indiana. Republican Indiana Senate president pro tempore Rod Bray said Wednesday that there are not enough votes for redistricting. This comes after Republican Indiana lawmakers have been discussing the topic with President Trump and Vice President Vance in recent months. Governor Mike Braun has not announced a special legislative session for redistricting at this time.
Five Republicans in the Indiana Senate have said they are in support of redrawing the U.S. House districts early, and three have come out against it. The rest of the 40 GOP members have not made definitive public statements yet.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – A petition sent to Governor Mike Braun opposes the redrawing of Indiana’s congressional districts. Various voting rights advocacy groups collected nearly 20,000 signatures from Hoosiers who do not want redistricting. The petition was delivered to Governor Braun’s office in the Indiana Statehouse on Tuesday.
This comes after President Trump and Vice President JD Vance have spoken to Republican lawmakers in Indiana about having a special legislative session to redistrict.

UPDATE (October 20, 2025):
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – Indiana Senate Republicans took a call Friday morning from President Trump as he continues to pressure them to redistrict the U.S. House maps for the state ahead of schedule. Trump is trying to add Republicans to the U.S. House in 2026 and has already convinced Texas and Missouri to redraw their districts.
Indiana Senator Tyler Johnson of Leo posted a statement on social media a few hours after the phone call with the President, saying he supported redistricting the state. He was also among the lawmakers who attended a meeting at the White House with Trump on the issue in August.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – Indiana lawmakers are remaining tight-lipped about the results of Friday’s meeting with Vice President JD Vance on redistricting.
Senate President Pro-Tempore Rodric Bray called it a “productive” and “fruitful” meeting, but added the Republicans have not made a decision yet on drawing new boundaries for the state’s U.S. House seats.
Bray says pros and cons were discussed, and added they will “hopefully have a decision very soon.”
Governor Mike Braun has said it is up to Republican leadership in the Senate and House whether or not he calls a special session to redistrict before the 2026 election.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to meet with Indiana Senate Republicans tomorrow.
Vance will be in the Hoosier state to try to drum up more support for the Trump administration’s push to get more red states to redraw their congressional districts for next year’s election.
Republican Senator Sue Glick of LaGrange says more lawmakers she has talked to do not want to redraw the maps until after the next U.S. Census is taken in 2030. Glick says they feel the current maps are fair.

WASHINGTON D.C. (ADAMS) – Indiana Republican lawmakers met with President Trump at the White House on Tuesday as the Trump administration pushes for the state to undertake a redistricting effort.
Dozens of Indiana Republicans met with officials, including Trump and Vice President Vance. Indiana may become the next state to redraw its congressional maps to favor more Republicans ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
A recent poll shows that most Hoosiers oppose the idea.
