FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Fort Wayne firefighters were able to rescue a child and several pets from a house on Monday.
Crews with the Fort Wayne Fire Department (FWFD) arrived at the 2600 block of Spring Street around 1 p.m. and found smoke and flames visible from the back of the house, and learned one adult and four kids were already out of the home.
Firefighters learned of another child who wasn’t accounted for and went inside the house to look. Soon after, they emerged with the child, who was not hurt.
Crews were able to locate and rescue a pet dog, a cat, and a snake that were in the home.
Investigators said that the fire was caused by “improperly discarded smoking materials” that spread from the outside of the house.
The FWFD released the following:
Fort Wayne Firefighters were dispatched to a reported house fire in the 2600 Block of Spring Street. The first engine was on scene in two minutes, and found smoke and flames visible from the rear of the house. One adult and four kids had self evacuated. As the first arriving crew was stretching a handline to the rear of the house, an adult was attempting to re-enter the house to look for a missing child. Firefighters immediately searched, quickly located the child, and brought them outside to safety. The child suffered no injuries. Firefighters then aggressively attacked the fire on the outside. Other arriving crews were able to locate and rescue a dog, a cat, and a small snake, while other crews checked the upstairs and attic for extension of fire. The fire was under control in 20 minutes. Fire crews remained, on scene, searching for and extinguishing hot spots in the attic insulation. Investigators determined the cause to be improperly discarded smoking materials, outside. Fort Wayne Firefighters were assisted by FWPD, TRAA, AEP, NIPSCO, Neighborhood Code Enforcement, and the Red Cross.
