INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – Retailers and researchers are criticizing the move by Indiana to exclude soda and some candy from being able to be purchased with SNAP funds.
The federal government approved the change last month, and it will take effect in January.
Indiana Grocery and Convenience Store Association President Joe Lackey says the decision came without much warning for retailers. He thinks SNAP will be going away nationwide. Indiana University professor emeritus of geography Dan Knudsen, who is also on the IU Food Institute, says the expenses will be shifted to other places.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – Indiana residents can no longer use SNAP benefits to purchase candy or soda.
Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Brooke Rollins signed a waiver Friday that lifts Indiana’s requirement to cover candy and soft drinks for those paying with SNAP.
Governor Braun supports the change. He says the decision is part of the state’s Make America Healthy Again agenda.
