MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Indiana Department of Corrections executed death row inmate Benjamin Ritchie early Tuesday morning.
Ritchie was convicted of killing a Beech Grove police officer nearly 25 years ago. He had been on death row since being found guilty in 2002.
Defense attorney Steve Schutte told reporters he saw his client’s body “violently” twitching for around three seconds before he relaxed and didn’t move for another few minutes. Ritchie was pronounced dead at 12:46 a.m.
Indiana and Wyoming are the only states with the death penalty that ban the media from witnessing executions.
