MONROE CO., Ind. (ADAMS) – The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana is suing the office of Governor Braun over a provision slipped into the state budget to give him full control of the Indiana University board of trustees.
Until he signed the budget into law this week, three members of the IU board of trustees were elected by IU alumni, and the other six were appointed by the governor’s office.
ACLU Indiana legal director Ken Falk says the new provisions “violate the prohibition on special legislation contained in the Indiana Constitution” and says every other four-year public university in the state has a process to allow alumni to select some trustees.
The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in Monroe County.
