FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – In the immediate wake of the president’s new tariffs – it is a mixed bag for automakers and workers.
General Motors will increase production at the Fort Wayne Assembly plant. The automaker is also planning to hire 225 temporary employees. Fort Wayne Assembly builds light-duty trucks for GM.
U.S. Senator Jim Banks released a statement, saying the announcement by GM comes less than 24 hours after President Trump announced import vehicle tariffs and says that plan, “is already delivering for working families in Indiana in a big way.”

However, Stellantis announced 900 layoffs at plants in Michigan and the Indiana Transmission Plant, Kokomo Transmission Plant, and Kokomo Casting Plant and that it shut down production at facilities in Canada and Mexico in response to the president’s new tariffs.
