INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – Voting rights groups have sent a “notice of violation” to the Indiana Secretary of State’s Office and the Indiana Election Division. They are alleging a new Indiana law violates the National Voter Registration Act.
Common Cause Indiana executive director Julia Vaughn says the law would require naturalized citizens “to jump through additional hoops to register to vote” and says the state already struggles with low voter turnout.
The 2024 law doesn’t take effect until July 1st and requires the state’s National Voter Registration Act official to “compare the statewide voter registration system with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles list of temporary credentials” and notify counties of any registered voter that might not be a citizen.
