INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – An immigration notice bill that will change how police handle arrested people suspected of being in the U.S. illegally has passed the Indiana Senate.
The bill would have jails and detention facilities needing to notify county sheriffs if an officer has probable cause to think a suspect has unlawfully entered the country.
Lieutenant Governor Micah Beckwith says the bill does not send a message that Indiana is not welcoming to immigrants but “we can’t help you if we don’t know you’re here, so, in order for us to help here, you’ve got to be here legally, you’ve got to go through the right process.”
