FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – A recent report from the Brookings Institution reveals that the Fort Wayne metropolitan area has achieved one of the highest growth rates in Black-owned businesses nationwide. Between 2017 and 2022, the number of Black-owned employer businesses increased by 203.1%, adding 132 new businesses.
This growth places Fort Wayne 5th in the nation among large metro areas for the largest increase in Black-owned businesses.

Greater Fort Wayne Inc. (GFW Inc.) says that local leaders credit this success to the resilience of Black entrepreneurs and the strong network of community organizations dedicated to business development.
“I’m thrilled to see the progress our community has made in the number of Black-owned businesses,” said Fort Wayne Mayor Sharon Tucker. “The credit for this lies with the local entrepreneurs who have had the courage to pursue their dreams and build a business here. Many of them were supported by the people and programs of dedicated partners working to educate, encourage, and provide loans and funding for small businesses and start-ups. In particular, I’m grateful for the support of the Black Chamber of Commerce, Greater Fort Wayne Inc., Brightpoint Development Fund, and the City of Fort Wayne’s Summit City Entrepreneur and Enterprise District (SEED).”
