FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – An officer-involved shooting is under investigation. The Fort Wayne Police Department says that it happened Sunday evening around 6:30 after a passing driver called police to report seeing a man passed out and slumped over in a pickup truck. Officers found that man near the intersection of Avondale Drive and East Rudisill Boulevard.
It is unclear why, but the FWPD says an officer discharged their weapon during the investigation, but no one was injured. Indiana State Police will investigate, and the officer has been placed on leave.
The FWPD released the following:
A passing motorist reported a male passed out and slumped over in a pickup truck near the intersection of Avondale Dr & E Rudisill Blvd. Fort Wayne Police Department officers responded just prior to 6:30 pm on February 23, 2025. Officers arrived in the area to locate a pickup truck with a male passed out inside the vehicle. A firearm was discharged by an officer. A person of interest has been located. The officer and the person of interest are uninjured. There is no threat to public safety.
Detectives are speaking to witnesses, attempting to locate surveillance videos, and will review body camera and car camera videos during the course of the investigation. The officer will be placed on administrative leave, as is standard protocol and policy. This incident remains under investigation by the FWPD Internal Affairs Division, the Prosecutor’s Office, and the Indiana State Police will conduct an independent investigation.
