UPDATE (February 25, 2025):
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – State lawmakers are moving forward with a plan to have several Illinois counties become part of the Hoosier state. House Bill 1008 passed the Indiana House on Thursday.
The Indiana House has approved a bill to take 33 counties from Illinois into the state by a 69-to-25 vote. House Speaker Todd Huston says his bill would create an Indiana-Illinois Boundary Adjustment Commission for the counties that have approved leaving Illinois. Huston says Indiana would “love to have you,” after the counties approved advisory referenda in 2020 to leave Illinois.
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, however, is opposed. It’s now heading to the Senate, where it is already sponsored by Republican Senator Scott Baldwin. If it passes, the Indiana-Illinois Boundary Adjustment Commission would consist of people from both states to talk about Indiana annexing counties from Illinois.
