FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – As temperatures dip into the single digits, frozen pipes in your home can lead to disrupted water service and costly damage.
To help homeowners prevent freezing pipes, the City Utilities is offering the following tips:
Run a small trickle of lukewarm water – to protect your water meter and pipes. The flow should be about the size of a pencil lead.
Keep garage doors closed – if your water meter is located there, as this helps retain heat and protect your pipes.
Open cabinet doors – below sinks, especially those on exterior walls, to allow warmer air to circulate around pipes.
Use a space heater – to keep warm air circulating near drains and pipes.
Locate your main shut-off valve – in case of an emergency. Knowing where it is can help you quickly stop water flow if a pipe bursts.
Taking these precautions now can save you from costly repairs and service disruptions later.
