HUNTERTOWN, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Allen County Sheriff’s Department says that a man is dead after an officer fired when during what was originally called a mental health crisis in Huntertown on Tuesday afternoon.
At approximately 2:27 p.m., officers responded to the 2700 block of Ascension Court, after receiving reports of that crisis and were made aware that the individual was armed.
Upon arrival, officers attempted to engage the man to de-escalate the situation. The individual briefly exited the residence, armed with a gun, but returned inside.
Around 3:30 p.m., both the Allen County SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiation Team were dispatched to the scene. While team members arrived at the staging area, no direct contact had yet been made with the individual.
Just before 4:00 p.m., the individual exited the residence again, still armed with a firearm. In response, an Allen County Sheriff’s Department officer discharged their weapon, striking the individual. Officers on the scene provided immediate medical assistance, and the individual was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased, according to the police.
The individual involved has been identified as an adult male.
The investigation is ongoing.

On December 17, 2024, at approximately 2:27 P.M., officers with the Allen County Sheriff’s Department responded to the 2700 block of Ascension Court in Huntertown, IN, reference a subject stating they were armed with a gun, going through a mental health crisis.
Officers arrived on scene and attempted to speak with the subject to de-escalate the situation. The subject exited the residence at one point, armed with a gun, then went back inside. Just after 3:30 P.M., the Allen County SWAT Team and the Allen County Crisis Negotiation Team were both paged to respond to the scene. Team members were starting to arrive to the staging area but had not began initiating contact with the subject.
Just before 4:00 P.M., the subject exited the residence again and was armed with a gun. One Allen County Sheriff’s Department Officer discharged their firearm, striking the subject. Officers on scene rendered medical aid to the subject, who was then transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
The subject involved in the investigation was confirmed to be an adult male.
All of this information is preliminary.
The Indiana State Police were called to the scene, per Sheriff’s Department policy.
This incident remains under investigation.
