DEKALB CO., Ind. (ADAMS) – The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office says a student is facing charges after bringing a rifle to a school parking lot in Garrett on Monday.
While details remain scarce, police say that administrators alerted a school resource officer when a rifle was found inside a vehicle on school property. The officer later seized the firearm.
During the investigation, authorities learned that a male student had posted a video on social media that seemed to show the outside of a Garrett school before shifting to reveal the rifle. Another school district had brought it to their attention.
The unnamed juvenile now faces a Level 6 felony charge for possession of a firearm on school grounds, as well as a misdemeanor charge. The DeKalb County Probation Department has taken the juvenile into custody.
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office released the following:
On December 9, 2024, Garrett Schools Administration contacted the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer and advised him of a rifle being located inside a vehicle on school property. The Garrett SRO responded to the parking lot and took possession of the rifle and initiated an investigation.
It was discovered that earlier in the morning, a male Garrett Schools student posted a video to a social media app. The video appeared to show the exterior of a Garrett school from the parking lot and scans to the passenger seat where a rifle is observed. A student at another school district observed the video and notified officials in his school district. The administration from that district contacted the Garrett Schools Administration and made them aware of the video.
The juvenile has been charged with Possession of a Firearm on School Grounds, a Level 6 Felony, and Possession of a Knife on School Grounds, a Level B Misdemeanor. The juvenile was detained by the DeKalb County Probation Department.
