FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The City of Fort Wayne has announced plans to expand the Riverfront District with the purchase of the Don Chavas property at the corner of Wells Street and Second Street.
The property will be purchased for its appraised value of $1.42 million, and under the terms of the agreement with JGA Properties, Don Chavas will continue operating through 2025. While the City intends to incorporate the property into the Riverfront’s tree-lined district, there are no specific development plans at this time.
The City released the following on Monday:
On Monday, the City of Fort Wayne announced an agreement with JGA Properties Inc. to purchase the property containing Don Chavas restaurant, located at the southeast corner of Wells Street and Second Street. The agreement will be presented for approval by the Fort Wayne Redevelopment Commission and City Council.
The City is purchasing the property at its appraised value, ensuring a fair and equitable transaction. Under the agreement, Don Chavas will remain open through at least 2025, allowing its loyal customers to continue enjoying the restaurant.
Meanwhile, the restaurant’s owners are actively working on a new concept they’ve been planning for years. “We are grateful for the many years we’ve spent on the Wells Street corridor and for all the friends who’ve made Don Chavas a part of this community,” said owner Roberto Soto. “This opportunity allows us to bring to life an exciting concept featuring authentic Mexican food and atmosphere, as part of the growing Riverfront district.”
This acquisition is a key milestone in the City’s Riverfront initiative, which aims to strengthen the connections between the Riverfront and surrounding neighborhoods while enhancing the urban landscape. It also supports the creation of vibrant and context-sensitive development along the Wells Street corridor.
“We are proud to collaborate with Don Chavas to honor its significance in our community while preparing for the next chapter of growth along Wells Street,” said Redevelopment Director Alec Johnson.
