ALLEN CO., Ind. (ADAMS) – A 40-year-old man from Spencerville is facing nine charges in a confrontation at a church nativity scene Saturday night that led to shots being fired by an Allen County Sheriff’s officer. Tyler Leavitt was charged with battery with a deadly weapon, resisting law enforcement, and pointing a loaded firearm at another person, among other counts.
A New Haven police officer called for “urgent assistance” after a man pointed a gun at him Saturday night.

ALLEN CO., Ind. (ADAMS) – Indiana State Police are investigating shots being fired by an Allen County Sheriff’s deputy Saturday night at a Fort Wayne church.
A New Haven police officer issued a call for “urgent assistance” over his police radio after saying a suspect had pointed a gun at him just before 9:15 p.m. at Central Ministries off Schwartz Road.
There were over 100 people in the area for a live nativity scene at the same time, and the deputy fired at least one shot when they arrived. Two people were hospitalized, and one suspect was arrested. It’s not known if the two people hospitalized were involved or if they were bystanders.
The Allen County Sheriff’s Department released the following:
On December 7, 2024, at approximately 9:14 P.M., officers with the Allen County Sheriff’s Department responded to 5801 Schwartz Road, at Central Ministries, after a New Haven Police Department officer called for urgent assistance over his police radio. The New Haven Police officer advised that a suspect pointed a firearm at him.
An Allen County Sheriff’s Department officer arrived on scene and located the suspect, along with other officers, on the church property. There was a large outdoor event taking place at the church. During the investigation, an Allen County Sheriff’s Department officer discharged their duty weapon.
Two people from the scene were taken to a local hospital in fair to serious condition.
There is one suspect detained at this time.
The Indiana State Police were called to the scene as standard Sheriff’s Department policy.
This is an active and ongoing investigation.
