FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – A man was arrested Thursday in connection with an incident that occurred on the Fourth of July.
Ian Wiggins, 22, was taken into custody by members of the Allen County Warrants Division around 3:18 p.m. for allegedly causing serious burns to an 11-year-old girl.
The Fort Wayne Police Department says that Wiggins threw a lit firework into a group of people and the device exploded in the girl’s hand.
She required immediate medical treatment and was left with lasting scars from the incident.
According to reports, Wiggins fled the scene before officers arrived. The Allen County Warrants Division apprehended him on Thursday after serving an active arrest warrant.
Wiggins is facing preliminary charges of battery against a child under 14 and illegal possession of fireworks.

In the midst of celebrating Independence Day, July 04, 2024, Ian Wiggins decided to hurl a firework into a group of people standing nearby. The firework detonated on the hand of an eleven (11) years old female child causing significant burns. She required immediate medical attention and will bear scars from the incident. Mr. Wiggens fled prior to the arrival of the FWPD. Detective Chuck Volz, an investigator assigned to the Crimes Against Persons Section, lead the investigation. Also assisting was FWPD Detective Barry Thompson and a Family Case Manager with the Indiana Department of Child Services. An Arrest Warrant was subsequently approved for Mr. Wiggins. He was apprehended this afternoon by members of the Allen County Warrants Division.
