FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Fort Wayne Police Department is investigating a shooting near downtown following reports of a possible break-in.
The Fort Wayne Police Department says officers responded to multiple 911 calls just after 10:30 p.m. Friday about a single shot being fired in the 600 block of 5th Street. Officers were initially dispatched to the area after receiving a report that a man was attempting to force entry into a home.
One man was found injured at the scene and transported to a local hospital in serious but non-life-threatening condition.
An early investigation, according to the FWPD, revealed that someone inside the residence had retrieved a handgun during the attempted break-in.
Authorities are now looking into the events that led up to and followed the 911 calls, including the circumstances surrounding the gunshot and the injury. It remains unclear whether the homeowner or the would-be intruder was the person who was shot.
Police said those at the residence on 5th Street were cooperating.

The Fort Wayne Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred on November 15, 2024, just after 10:30 pm in the 600 block of Fifth St. Officers responded to a disturbance at a residence involving a male who arrived at the home. During the initial call to 911 a caller stated someone was trying to enter the home as well. While officers were responding to the incident, multiple 911 calls were received reporting a single gunshot was heard. Officers arrived to locate a male subject suffering from an apparent gunshot wound and provided aid until medics arrived.
The male was transported to a local hospital in serious condition. Doctors at the hospital advised the male’s injury was non-life threatening.
The initial investigation indicates a person associated with the residence retrieved a handgun during the disturbance. Police are investigating the events prior to the call to 911, the events during and after the 911 call, and the exact set of circumstances which caused the gun to discharge striking the male. People at the residence at the time of the incident cooperated with investigators. No arrests have been made and there is no threat to public safety.
This incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department.
