Indiana State Police released the following:
At the request of the Allen County Sheriff, detectives with the Indiana State Police are investigating the death of an Allen County Jail inmate that occurred earlier this morning.
The preliminary investigation found that at approximately 7:18am this morning, a jail nurse had followed up on a medical check with inmate Jose Velazquez Trejo, 25, of Fort Wayne in his holding cell. Trejo was dealing with what were believed to be withdraw symptoms possibly from narcotics use (prior to his incarceration on October 18, 2024). After the initial morning check, the jail nurse began preparing paperwork to have Trejo transported out to a local hospital for further medical treatment.
At 7:58am, jail staff found that Trejo had gone unresponsive in his holding cell. Jail staff immediately called for an ambulance and began CPR on Trejo until medics arrived. Medics took over life-saving attempts, but would pronounce Trejo deceased in the jail at approximately 8:30am.
The Allen County Coroner has scheduled an autopsy for tomorrow morning at the Northeast Forensic Center in Fort Wayne.
Trejo was being held in the Allen County jail since October 18, 2024 for arrest warrants out of LaGrange and Noble Counties. He was pending transfer on those warrants.
Family notifications were made by the Allen County Police Department.
This remains an ongoing investigation by the Indiana State Police, Allen County Police Department, and the Allen County Coroner’s Office. There is no further information to release at this time.
