FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – One person is hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after a police chase that resulted in a crash yesterday morning in Fort Wayne. That person’s vehicle was hit by a vehicle driven by 34-year-old Derrick Benson as Benson was trying to get away from police. The Fort Wayne Police Department says both speed and alcohol are considered factors in the crash. Benson was arrested on several charges.
The FWPD released the following:
Sunday, October 6th, 2024, around 7:50 p.m., officers with the Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) responded to a personal injury accident located at the intersection of N. Clinton St. and Parnell Ave. Upon their arrival, they discovered that a truck and a sedan were involved. It appears that the sedan was traveling southbound on N. Clinton St. failed to yield, turned left onto Parnell Ave., and collided with the truck as it traveled northbound.
The truck then struck a traffic light pole. The driver of the truck was taken to a local hospital where that person’s medical condition was assessed as critical. It is suspected that alcohol was a contributing factor. There is a person in custody, however, at the time of this release, charges have not been determined. This incident is also being investigated by the FWPD’s FACT, Air Support Unit, and the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office.
Derrick J. Benson, 34 year old, was arrested last night for the following:
Resisting Law Enforcement with a Vehicle Causing Serious Bodily Injury (Level 5 Felony)
Operating While Intoxicated Causing Serious Bodily Injury (Level 5 Felony)
Criminal Recklessness (Level 6 Felony)
Benson had minor injuries. To clarify, Benson’s passenger was listed in serious condition. The person’s condition in the vehicle that Benson struck while evading the police was life-threatening.
