FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The challenges of committing to an active, healthy and engaged lifestyle are common to most adults, including for the older adult population. But adding more physical activity doesn’t have to include boring repetitions or cookie-cutter approaches.
The City of Fort Wayne released the following:
Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Community Center hosts the annual Active Aging Week, Sept. 28-Oct. 4, to offer adults ages 50 and above opportunities to demonstrate that older adults can take positive steps forward for their health in a safe, welcoming and enjoyable setting.
Initiated by the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) in 2003, Active Aging Week (AAW) highlights the value of embracing all dimensions of wellness—including physical, emotional, intellectual, social and more, to enrich quality of life.
Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Director Steve McDaniel says “according to the National Recreation and Park Association, the top activities that older adults want to see offered through local parks and recreation include outdoor and indoor activities, physical exercise and educational opportunities.” He adds, “Active Aging Week at the Community Center offers all of those options in a friendly and fun atmosphere.”
Participants age 50 and above can choose from the following free events: cornhole, golf, pickleball, billiards, disc golf, downtown mural tour, disc golf, table tennis, shuffleboard, Bocce, Connect Four, timed jigsaw puzzling, Wii bowling and trivia. Prizes will be awarded to top finishers. To sign up, just call 260-427-6460 or stop by the Community Center located at 233 West Main Street. Please register at least two business days prior to the scheduled event.
“When you participate in Active Aging Week, we think that you will like it and we hope that you will want to experience more of the wellness programing that is offered all year long” says Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Community Center Manager Mary Wagner-Stockman. She adds “from our drop-in classes to our leagues and free seminars, Active Aging Week is a gateway to new opportunities to experience the benefits of increased movement and connection with like-minded neighbors.”
Fort Wayne Active Aging Week gold sponsors: Evergreen Village at Fort Wayne, PBS Fort Wayne, Nine Mile Restaurant and Silver Birch.
